Intro

The SQE1 marking scheme can feel like a mystery - the marking method is opaque and past papers aren't provided, so it can feel unnerving to know whether you're on track.

We're here to help demystify the score in our own way, by sharing what we've noted after dozens of interviews, chats and data-points collected from Law Drill users who sat the SQE1 exam - both from people who passed and people who failed.

THE QUESTION: What should I be scoring on Law Drills to be in a good position to pass the SQE1 exam?

THE QUESTION: What should I be scoring on Law Drills to be in a good position to pass the SQE1 exam?

THE QUESTION: What should I be scoring on Law Drills to be in a good position to pass the SQE1 exam?

THE ANSWER: Aim for at >70% on Law Drills MCQs

THE ANSWER: Aim for at >70% on Law Drills MCQs

THE ANSWER: Aim for at >70% on Law Drills MCQs

We've noticed that dedicated users scoring >70% in Law Drill MCQs are much more likely to score >300 (i.e. pass) in SQE1 than users scoring <70%.

This isn't a guarantee of course, and there are plenty of other factors at play including how you manage your time and energy on test day - it's long and intense, so you need to prep accordingly (we have a timed exam-mode for this very reason). And there's also noise around the 'test' that you end up receiving as there are multiple variations(!).

But the 70% rule is pretty solid and where we now set our guidelines.

This 70% threshold was found in both the FLK1 and FLK2 papers.

And the 70% threshold also translates into most of the subject areas within SQE1
(e.g. >70% in Dispute Resolution on Law Drills translated into >300 in Dispute Resolution)

Note 1: you need to do good amount of MCQs in the subject, so our guidance is to do at least 50 MCQs in the subject area before you start to think about this 70% guideline.

Note 2: Law Drills is an adaptive learning platform - which means that the platform learns about you and then targets your gaps and weaknesses to prepare you for the exam. This also means that everyone will receive different curated questions, making it hard to create generalisable predictive rules (beyond the 70% guideline above). So do your own research and prepare with a wide range of tools (we recommend flashcards and MCQs), to best position yourself to pass SQE1.

We'll continue to update these guidelines as we learn more. We'll also release more research as we improve the platform and tools to help you better prepare, pass the SQE and be on your way to practising law as a qualified solicitor
